BOTANICALS

Cotton is a plant fiber that surrounds the seeds of "true" cotton plants, shrubs of the Malvaceae family. This fiber, composed of nearly pure cellulose, is typically processed into yarn which is woven to produce fabrics

HISTORY

Discovered by chance by an Indian, intrigued by branches adorned with very soft white flakes, cotton has been cultivated for millennia. Alexander the Great quickly understood the significance of this plant, noting the quality of garments made with cotton fiber. They were lighter and finer than his own, made of linen and wool.

GEOGRAPHY

The cotton plant (genus Gossypium, family Malvaceae) is a shrub native to India, cultivated in many warm countries for the fibers that surround the seeds at maturity of the fruit. Depending on the country, the plant may be more or less treelike, but it is the herbaceous cotton plant (50-60 cm) that yields the finest fibers.
